Historic Spring Rains Bring Drainage Problems to the Surface

This spring has delivered some of the heaviest and most persistent rainfall we’ve seen in years. With saturated soil, overflowing gutters, and pooling water, many homeowners and property managers have been faced with the harsh reality of poor yard drainage.

If your lawn turned into a swamp or your patio became a pond, you’re not alone.

We’ve been busy at Upscale Lawncare responding to calls across the region, helping property owners protect their landscapes, foundations, and outdoor spaces from long-term water damage. Here’s a look at how we tackled one recent project after heavy rains revealed major drainage issues:

Drainage Repair & Water Management Solution

  • French Drain Installation: We install a French drain sloping to redirect storm water away from saturated areas. The trench is carefully lined with geotextile weed fabric and filled with clean drainage gravel to maintain water flow and prevent clogs.
  • 4″ Corrugated Perforated Pipe: A high-capacity pipe is placed within the trench to capture and move excess water underground. The top 4 inches are filled with topsoil and finished with sod for a seamless lawn appearance.
  • Dry Wells & Pop-up Emitters: At key points, we may add dry wells to store runoff during peak storms and use pop-up emitters to discreetly release water, keeping critters out and keeping water moving.
  • Downspout Inspection & Grading: We check all downspouts to ensure they are unclogged and functioning properly. We also regrade areas near any patios to ensure water drains away from structures—not toward them.
  • Extra Yard Drains & Surface Catchment: We install additional drains at low points where water naturally collects, using surface grates and piping that runs to daylight, topped with popup emitters to keep systems clean and effective.
  • Erosion Control & Restoration: Once the drainage system is in place, we restore all disturbed areas with seed, straw, and fresh topsoil—leaving the property better than we found it.

Preventative Measures Matter

In another case, we built a drainage mound and swale to redirect storm water flow between old and new blacktop areas, incorporating NDS Flo Well Dry Wells to hold hundreds of gallons of water underground—reducing runoff, preventing erosion, and protecting infrastructure.

We also tackled a commercial courtyard where ongoing flooding near buildings required a dual French drain system, river rock topping, and strategically placed dry wells to fully capture stormwater and route it safely away.

Don’t Wait Until Water Finds Its Way In

Spring storms have made it clear: If water doesn’t have somewhere to go, it will find its own path—often right into your foundation, crawlspace, or lawn.

If your yard struggled with drainage this season, now is the time to take action. Upscale Lawncare offers permanent, cost-effective drainage solutions designed to protect your property from seasonal rains and future flooding.
